Today, I want to talk to you about TRADITIONS
In Italy, they hold deep value: they are part of our history and cultural identity, and we take great pride in them. When I travel, I love discovering the customs and traditions of the places I visit because I believe that traveling is also a way to feel part of a community.
In this newsletter, I’ve decided to share some traditional events that take place in April. If you’re in Tuscany during this time, you absolutely can’t miss them!
1. L’Antica Giudeata – Chianciano Terme
On the evening of Good Friday, Chianciano Terme hosts L’Antica Giudeata, a historical reenactment featuring over 150 costumed participants.
The procession moves through the streets of the village: Christ carries the Cross, escorted by Roman soldiers on horseback, while the Madonna and the Pious Women mourn. Among the characters, you’ll also find Pontius Pilate with his attendants and dignitaries.
2. Lo Scoppio del Carro – Florence
One of the most anticipated Easter events in Florence is Lo Scoppio del Carro.
On Easter Sunday morning, around 10 AM, the Brindellone—a 9-meter-tall cart pulled by oxen—is led to the Duomo. There, a dove-shaped rocket ignites the fireworks inside, creating a breathtaking spectacle!
3. La Processione degli Scalzi – Pienza
In Pienza, the evocative Processione degli Scalzi takes place on Good Friday. The statue of Christ is carried through the streets of the city, preceded by 12 hooded figures walking barefoot, each holding a torch. A deeply moving event.
4. La Passione di Cristo – Grassina
Just 15 minutes from Florence, in the village of Grassina, one of the most powerful reenactments of the Passion of Christ takes place on Good Friday: La Passione di Cristo. With over 500 costumed participants, the procession moves through the town, while key moments from the life of Jesus are dramatically staged at different points along the route, accompanied by music and narration.
This tradition dates back over 300 years and, regardless of one’s faith, it is a remarkable cultural and folkloric event not to be missed.
April: The Perfect Month for a Picnic in Tuscany
If the weather permits, April is the ideal month for an outdoor picnic. We, Tuscans, love them, and our region offers some wonderful places to enjoy one. Here are a few of my favorite spots:
🌳 Parco di Serravalle – Empoli
Perfect for families with children! A large green park with a small lake, outdoor games, a picnic area, and a bar. You won’t find tourists, just locals. Bring a blanket, a ball, and fun is guaranteed!
🏞 Parco dei Renai – Lastra a Signa
The entrance is free, and here you’ll find expansive green areas for picnics, a well-equipped beach, boat rentals for a tour of the lake, a climbing wall, and a large playground for the little ones. Info: www.parcorenai.it
🏛 Villa Demidoff – Firenze
If you want to combine nature and culture, this is the perfect spot! Just a few kilometers from Florence, Villa Demidoff is accessible by car or bus and the entrance is free. In addition to relaxing in its green spaces, you can admire extraordinary works of art, such as the Colosso dell’Appennino by Giambologna and the Cappella del Buontalenti.

A Pasquetta picnic here is a classic! Bring a schiacciata filled with cold cuts and cheeses, a bottle of red wine, and a traditional colomba cake… and enjoy the day surrounded by history, art, and nature.
